Britain Plugs Into Clean Energy with £205m Boost
Britain’s green energy revolution is charging ahead! The UK government has slashed £205 million into its latest renewable energy auction, supercharging home-grown power, fuelling the economy, and tightening the nation’s energy security.
Contracts for Difference Powers Clean Energy Boom
The flagship Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme is at the heart of this push. So far, it’s handed out contracts worth nearly 27GW of low-carbon capacity—enough to power millions of homes while slashing harmful emissions. The previous auction alone locked in almost 11GW, capable of lighting up 12 million British households.
Annual Auctions to Drive Green Energy and Jobs
- The fresh £205 million budget kicks off the first-ever annual CfD auction.
- £170 million earmarked for offshore wind to keep Britain a world leader.
- £10 million reserved for tidal stream tech, sparking tidal power innovation.
This steady cash flow will rocket green investments, support tens of thousands of jobs, and replace pricey fossil fuels with cheap, clean, UK-made power.
Government and Industry Celebrate Green Growth
Energy Minister Graham Stuart said: “Our flagship Contracts for Difference scheme is already delivering clean, homegrown energy as well as growing a green economy with green jobs.”
“Today’s budget announcement, the move to annual auctions and continued investments in renewable energy will help shield the UK from global crises like Putin’s war in Ukraine and push Britain towards having some of the cheapest wholesale electricity prices in Europe.”
“I’m excited for the opportunities annual auctions will open for Britain’s world-class renewables sector, cementing our spot as a top destination for green investment.”
Backing Scotland, Wales, and Beyond
So far, Scotland is powering ahead with 52 CfD projects—about 30% of all UK contracts and a quarter of the capacity. Wales also shines with 9 projects delivering 260MW. The scheme cleverly protects consumers: when market prices climb above agreed rates, generators pay back the difference—helping lower bills in the long run.
Offshore Wind: UK’s Crown Jewel
Britain boasts Europe’s largest wind fleet, including the world’s four biggest wind farms. With a goal of 50GW offshore wind by 2030, including 5GW floating wind, the UK is set to power every home from coastal breezes. This fuels vital investments and supports 90,000 jobs.
Plus, yesterday’s Spring Budget revealed a massive £20 billion green investment package, including carbon capture and the first nuclear project in decades at Sizewell C.
Neil McDermott, CEO of Low Carbon Contracts Company (LCCC), said: “We welcome the government’s announcement on CfD Allocation Round 5. We look forward to working with investors and generators as we stay on track for Net Zero.”
