Ukraine and Russia Start Talks as EU Slams Down Heavy Sanctions
First Contact Amid Crisis
Anton Geraschenko, adviser to Ukraine’s Interior Minister, revealed to ITV News that talks between Ukrainian envoys and Russian diplomats kicked off around 3.30pm on Sunday. The meetings are taking place right on the Ukraine-Belarus border, according to the Ukrainian president’s office. This marks a rare direct dialogue amid escalating tensions.
EU Unleashes Toughest Sanctions Yet
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made a bold move, announcing the EU will, for the first time ever, finance weapons and essential gear for a nation under attack—Ukraine.
She also unveiled three blistering new sanctions targeting Russia and Belarus:
- Banning Russian Aircraft from EU Skies“We are shutting down the EU airspace for Russians,” von der Leyen declared. All Russian-owned, registered, or controlled aircraft—including billionaire oligarchs’ private jets—will be barred from EU airspace, landing, or take-off.
- Cracking Down on Kremlin PropagandaThe EU will ban Russia’s state-run TV giants, 1 Today and Sputnik, plus their subsidiaries. Von der Leyen slammed their “toxic and harmful disinformation” used to justify Putin’s war.
- Expanding Sanctions on BelarusLabeling Lukashenko’s regime “complicit,” new sanctions will hit Belarus’s key sectors and exports, ratcheting up pressure on Putin’s closest ally.
BP Cuts Ties with Russian Oil Giant
In a dramatic U-turn, BP announced it will offload its 19.75% stake in state-owned Rosneft immediately. CEO Bernard Looney and fellow director Bob Dudley are stepping down from Rosneft’s board. The invasion of Ukraine forced BP to “fundamentally rethink” its relationship with the Russian oil firm.
The EU’s hard-hitting sanctions and direct support for Ukraine signal a new chapter in the standoff, with Europe drawing a clear line in the sand for Putin’s aggression.
