Fire Breaks Out on Wightlink Car Ferry

Breaking News Reports of small  Fire onboard Wightlink St Cecila Car Ferry this afternoon.

Passengers have been moved to safety to the top deck of the ferry. Witnesses on board have praised staff with their handling of the incident. It is believed that the boat set sail from Portsmouth  just before 5pm this evening (Sunday) to Fisbourne  when the blaze broke out on board one of the car decks half way across the Solent.

The ferry has safely docked at Fishbourne passengers are disembarking from the vessel.

A spokesman for Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said that they had not been informed or attended the incident

A Wightlink spokeswoman said a small fire was discovered in the bin room on the main car deck of St Cecilia. It has been confirmed that the fire, which broke out in the bin room, has been fully extinguished.

Passengers have now been allowed to disembark at Fishbourne.
