Lorry Fire Sparks Explosions, M2 Motorway Shut
A huge lorry fire has sparked panic and forced a full shutdown of the M2 motorway near Rochester, Kent. The inferno broke out on the London-bound carriageway between Junction 3 (Chatham) and Junction 2 (Strood), with smoke and flames also affecting the eastbound side between Junction 1 and Junction 2.
Residents nearby were shocked by loud explosions as the vehicle burst into flames. “We heard four or five bangs,” said one Borstal local, “People rushed outside to see what was happening. The motorway’s been completely shut.”
Emergency Crews Battle Flames as Motorists Stuck
Kent Fire and Rescue scrambled four fire engines to the scene. By 11.20pm, two engines and a bulk water carrier remained battling the blaze. A passing motorist said the fire started small near the cab, with the driver trying to put it out before crews arrived. Thankfully, the driver is said to be OK.
The fire’s glow and thick smoke could be seen for miles, alarming residents and road users alike.
Two Injured But No Serious Harm
Kent Police confirmed two men suffered burns to their hands and smoke inhalation but their injuries are not serious. Both were treated by South East Coast Ambulance Service at the scene.
Kent Fire issued a safety warning for locals near Junctions 2 and 3, advising them to keep windows and doors closed due to smoke. This advisory was lifted after the fire was brought under control.
Motorway Closure Causes Major Delays – Drivers Advised to Avoid Area
Highways England confirmed full closure of the M2 in both directions from Junction 3 to Junction 2 and between Junction 1 and Junction 2. Motorists faced long delays from around 6.30pm, with closures expected to last several hours overnight.
By 1.33am, firefighting operations were complete and the coastbound side reopened. Drivers are urged to seek alternative routes and stay patient while clean-up continues.
