Lifeboat Legend Denis Marks Honoured After 55 Years of Service

Denis Marks has been a lifeboat hero since 1967. Starting as a shore helper, he climbed the ranks at Walmer Lifeboat Station, serving in every major role. From D Class crew and helm to emergency mechanic, second coxswain, and finally as coxswain of the 1 Class lifeboat Hampshire Rose until its retirement in 1980.

Denis didn’t stop there. He became Atlantic senior helm, Deputy Launch Authority, and has been the Lifeboat Operations Manager since 2001. Over his 55 years on the job, Walmer’s lifeboat team has launched 1,257 times, rescued 1,429 people, and saved 313 lives.

A Humble Hero’s Reaction to Top Award

“As you can imagine, this is a great shock and very unexpected. I am both very moved, humbled and surprised that the RNLI has considered me worthy of such an honour,” Denis said.

“All I have ever done is try to do my best for Walmer Lifeboat and the Institution. Seeing the station thrive and watching my colleagues grow has been a reward in itself. I’m extremely grateful to those who nominated me and prepared the evidence for this award.”

“It’s a true honour to accept this award on behalf of everyone at Walmer Lifeboat Station, past and present.”
