Sharp Resident Outsmarts Distraction Burglars in Havant

At 4.50pm on Friday, April 8, two men and a woman targeted a home on Stockheath Way, Havant — but the homeowner wasn’t having it.

Burglars Try the Classic Distraction Trick

The woman at the door claimed there was a problem with the back door and tried to lure the resident away from the front.

She even asked if the resident lived alone, raising alarm bells. The homeowner kept the door chain on, stayed suspicious, and told the intruders to jog on.

Quick Thinking Foils Burglary Attempt

The trio left empty-handed, heading towards 1 Road. The victim described the woman as under 30, olive-skinned or Asian, wearing a woolly hat and speaking with a foreign accent.

“They were trying to distract the resident into unlocking the back door, leaving the front door wide open,” said PC Alex McDonald.

“There was nothing wrong with her back door. She did exactly the right thing — keeping the chain on, turning them away, and ringing the police.”

Police Urge Public to Stay Alert

Officers remind everyone:

  • Always use a door chain when answering the door to strangers.
  • Check caller credentials carefully — and do NOT call the number on their ID. Use an independent source like a phone book or bill.
  • Never engage with cold callers or doorstep traders.
  • Keep all doors locked at all times.
  • Don’t keep large amounts of cash at home.
  • Consider joining a No Cold Calling Zone or Neighbourhood Watch.
  • Report any suspicious activity or callers immediately by calling 999.
  • Look out for vulnerable neighbours and friends.

Stay sharp and don’t let distraction burglars catch you off guard!
