A major police cordon remains in place on West Street, Chichester tonight after reports a man was seen carrying a gun in the busy shopping area. Armed officers from West Sussex Police, supported by dog units, have shut down a large section of the main shopping strip, causing chaos for shoppers and residents.

The incident began at around 8.45pm on Sunday evening, with police quickly setting up a cordon outside several banks, while a second cordon has been established at the top of West Street. Authorities are urging the public to avoid the area while investigations continue.

Bystanders Shocked as Heavily Armed Police Take Over

One eyewitness told us, “We were walking back to uni and couldn’t take our usual route because of the cordon. We were told it was a firearms incident. We saw police with guns and several officers carrying firearms.”

“I’m very shocked that something like this could happen in Chichester. It’s usually a lovely place to live.”
