World War Two Pipe Bomb Shuts Down Solent Airport!
Solent Airport, the iconic backdrop for Harry Styles’ hit movie Dunkirk, was forced to shut down this afternoon. Contractors unearthed a suspected World War Two pipe bomb while installing new ducting for a power station. Bomb disposal experts rushed to the scene, setting up a 100-metre safety cordon.
Major Road Closures and Traffic Chaos
The nearby Stubbington Lane is closed at key junctions with Moody Road, Eric Road, Sea Lane, and Crofton Avenue as police deal with the explosive device. Drivers face diversions via Crofton Avenue and Salterns Road to Bells Lane. Authorities are warning motorists to plan alternative routes amid heavy traffic delays.
Historic Ordinance Discovered During Construction Work
Fareham Borough Council confirmed the device was found during work on a new substation at Swordfish Business Park. Police and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) teams are on site investigating. The airport remains closed as a precautionary measure.
Council Leader Warns: ‘We Are Not Taking Any Chances’
“It is the right thing to do – we are not going to take any risks,” said council leader Sean Woodward. “There were many pipe bombs laid during the war. This could be one that hasn’t been found yet, or it could be something innocent. Either way, we are being extremely cautious.”
A Hampshire Constabulary spokeswoman added: “We were called to the HMS Daedalus site at 12.38pm today after what is believed to be historic ordnance was discovered. Officers are on scene liaising with the EOD team. No evacuation has been necessary so far.”
