Blaze Breaks Out on 10th Floor Flat in Barking – Smoke Alarms Save the Day!

Firefighters are warning everyone to get smoke alarms fitted after a fire ripped through a Barking block of flats in the early hours. The blaze erupted while occupants were fast asleep on the 10th floor of The Coverdales.

Smoke Alarms Sound the Alarm

Thanks to working smoke alarms, one adult and five children fled the flat safely. In total, around 80 residents evacuated before the fire brigade arrived. A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said, “Fortunately, this flat was fitted with working smoke alarms that raised the alarm and alerted the occupant to the fire. Without smoke detection, this could have ended much worse.”

Rapid Response Puts Out Fire

  • Fire Brigade called at 2:05 AM
  • Fire under control by 3:01 AM
  • Five fire engines dispatched
  • 31 firefighters from Barking, East Ham, Plaistow, and Ilford

The fire partially damaged the flat, with the cause believed to be a faulty immersion heater.

Fire Safety Must-Haves

The Brigade urges all householders to install multiple smoke alarms and a heat alarm in the kitchen. These early-warning devices can make the difference between life and death.
