Military Grenades and Chemicals Spark Evacuation in Lowestoft
Chaos hit Normanhurst Close, Lowestoft, this afternoon after police found a stash of chemicals and two military grenades during a pre-planned raid. The dramatic discovery just before 1pm on Sunday, 28 July, forced at least 60 homes to be evacuated and a 100-metre safety cordon to be set up.
Bomb Squad and Firefighters Called In
Officers swooped on the property, recovering suspicious chemicals alongside the deadly explosives. The Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team raced to the scene, backed by Suffolk Fire and Rescue crews, to examine and secure the hazardous items.
Cordon Partially Lifted as Investigation Continues
The outer cordon has now been lifted, allowing most residents to return home. However, the immediate property and three neighbouring homes remain sealed off while investigations carry on.
Man in 50s Arrested on Firearm Suspicion
A man in his 50s was arrested at the scene on suspicion of possession of a firearm. He remains in police custody as officers probe the shocking haul.
“We thank local residents for their patience and understanding during this afternoon’s emergency response,” said police officials.
Normanhurst Close is still closed to traffic and pedestrians as police continue their enquiries into this unusual and dangerous find.
