Man Found Guilty of Murder After Deadly London Stabbing Spree
Joe Gynane Convicted for Fatal and Non-Fatal Stabbings
A man who plunged central London into terror has been found guilty of murder after fatally stabbing one victim and seriously injuring another. Joe Gynane, homeless and without a fixed address, tried to dodge responsibility, claiming diminished mental capacity. But an Old Bailey jury saw through his defence.
Following a gripping two-and-a-half week trial, Gynane was convicted not only of murder but also of grievous bodily harm (GBH) for stabbing a 16-year-old boy in the leg.
Brutal Attacks in London’s West End
- Just after 6am on Sunday, 3 March, police rushed to Romilly Street, W1, where 37-year-old Mohammed Elmi had been stabbed.
- Despite emergency medical efforts, Elmi tragically died days later in hospital on 6 March.
- Hours after the first attack, Gynane struck again on University Street, stabbing a teenage boy twice in the leg.
The teenager survived and has since recovered.
Police Chase and Arrest
Officers at the scene of the second stabbing immediately noticed Gynane acting suspiciously. When confronted, he bolted on foot. A brief chase ended with his arrest, and a discarded knife was recovered nearby.
On the way to custody, Gynane shockingly confessed in vivid detail to both stabbings. But at the station, he refused to cooperate and even spat at two officers.
Impact and Investigation
“Shortly after his arrest, Gynane admitted stabbing Mr Elmi and a second young man in remorseless detail,” said Detective Inspector Justin Howick from the Specialist Crime Command. “His self-serving violence has had a terrible impact on Mr Elmi’s family for whom this conviction will be of limited comfort.”
Sentencing is scheduled for Thursday, 10 October at the Old Bailey. The chilling attacks have left a lasting scar on London’s West End.
