New High-Tech Lifesaving Aircraft Take Off for UK Coast Rescue
The Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) has launched two cutting-edge aircraft to supercharge search and rescue missions. These planes, packed with advanced sensors, can spot a person in the water from up to 40 miles away. They’re also able to drop emergency locator beacons, communications gear, and first aid supplies straight to those in peril.
Always Ready to Save Lives 24/7
Based at Doncaster-Sheffield Airport, specially trained pilots and their crews will be on constant alert for emergencies along the UK coastline. These aircraft will also back up HM Coastguard’s anti-pollution efforts by monitoring pollution levels in UK waters.
Maritime Minister Nusrat Ghani said: “From pulling fishermen from treacherous waters, to hoisting people to safety from the most remote locations in the country, MCA rescue teams carry out vital lifesaving every day. The ground-breaking new technology aboard these new aircraft will be an invaluable asset in time-critical rescue situations.”
Already Saving Thousands Each Year
The current search and rescue helicopter fleet responds to around seven emergency calls daily, rescuing over 1,600 people nationwide last year alone. MCA’s Commercial & Programmes Director, Damien Oliver, hailed the new aircraft as a “welcome addition” to the fleet.
These Beechcraft King Air B200 planes come equipped with state-of-the-art cameras and sensors, spotting people in the water from great distances. They will also assist other public bodies across the UK in their vital work.
High-Tech Gear and Serious Flying Time
Each aircraft is expected to log roughly 1,000 flight hours annually. Arnie Palmer, Director of 2Excel Special Missions, praised the partnership with MCA, highlighting their swift development and delivery of complex capabilities, including integrated design, manufacturing, installation, and crew training.
These jets feature electro-optical infrared search cameras and the latest multi-spectral reconnaissance sensors, managed through a high-tech mission control system. They can even drop emergency beacons and flares to survivors stranded at sea.
The five-year deal with 2Excel Aviation includes an optional two-year extension, offering a highly capable, cost-effective rescue solution while allowing multiple government departments to use the aircraft without separate contracts.
