Bomb scare shuts down Brighton street after explosive discovery
Police lock down Horton Road
A major police operation is underway in Brighton after explosive materials were found in a property on Horton Road. Officers from Sussex Police swooped in just after 11.30am on Friday, sparking an immediate lockdown.
Royal Navy EOD specialists called in
Experts from the Royal Navy’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit in portsmouth/" title="Portsmouth" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Portsmouth have been drafted in to make the scene safe. Wearing full bomb suits and helmets, the bomb squad deployed a remote-controlled robot to handle the dangerous devices.
Mass evacuation and emergency response
Paramedics and the High-Intensity Response Team (HART) from South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECA) also rushed to the scene. Several residents have been evacuated as a safety precaution while the operation continues.
Suspect in custody
A Sussex Police spokesperson said: “A man has been arrested on suspicion of possessing an explosive substance for an unlawful purpose. The incident has been protracted and began at 11.30am today.”
The arrested man is 30 years old. Officers were initially alerted after reports of a strong petrol smell coming from the flat.
