Woman Jailed Over Fatal Isle of Wight Crash

A young woman has been locked up after causing a devastating crash that killed one and seriously injured four others on the Isle of Wight.

Tragedy at Betty Haunt Lane

Yaashmi Ravikumar, 20, from Buller Road, Laindon, admitted causing death by dangerous driving and four counts of serious injury by dangerous driving. She appeared at the Isle of Wight Crown Court on Monday.

Ravikumar was behind the wheel when her car pulled across the path of a Southern Vectis double-decker bus near Newport in April 2019. The horror smash happened at a notorious accident black spot on Betty Haunt Lane, just outside Newport.

Isle of Wight Gran Dies, Four Seriously Injured

Gran Yvonne Copland tragically lost her life in the smash, while 14 others were injured. Four — including the bus driver — suffered life-changing injuries. The scene was declared a major incident, with four helicopters scrambled to the island to help.

Sentence and Driving Ban

Ravikumar was sentenced to 18 months in prison for causing death by dangerous driving. She also received a concurrent 12-month sentence for the serious injuries caused. On top of that, she was slapped with a 33-month driving ban.
