Air Rifle Attack on Police Sees Man Jailed Over Three Years
Pellets fired at officers in New Ash Green
A violent confrontation in New Ash Green ended with a man behind bars for over three years after he fired an air weapon at police.
Adam Woodbridge, 49, targeted officers with pellets during a 2020 stand-off at a property in Bazes Shaw. Cops were called out following reports Woodbridge had threatened and assaulted a woman known to him.
Shot through door hits officer’s hand
When officers asked Woodbridge to come to the front door, he hurled abuse and warned, “whoever comes in here is getting hurt.” He then fired shots from inside the house, with one pellet piercing the door and hitting an officer’s hand.
Backup arrived swiftly. Police forced entry, arrested Woodbridge, and confiscated his air rifle.
Sentenced to 3 years 3 months plus restraining order
Standing before Maidstone Crown Court, Woodbridge admitted to possession of the air weapon with intent to cause fear, common assault of an emergency worker, and criminal damage. He denied other assault charges, which were left on file.
On 15 July, the court sentenced him to three years and three months behind bars. A five-year restraining order was also imposed to protect the victim.
Police warn of dangers from air weapons
Detective Constable Megan Hughes of West Kent’s Vulnerability Investigation Team said: “While no one was seriously injured, this custodial sentence highlights the serious risks air weapons pose in the wrong hands. The restraining order reflects the long-lasting distress caused to the woman involved. We hope this outcome brings her some comfort.”
