Chaos erupted in Hackney on Sunday lunchtime after police stopped a car over a vehicle registration error — sparking claims of racial profiling from Labour MP Dawn Butler.

Around midday on 9 August, officers pulled over a car after plugging an incorrect registration into their system. The mistakenly entered number flagged the vehicle as registered in Yorkshire.

Dawn Butler, the Brent MP and one of the passengers, has slammed the Metropolitan Police for what she calls “racial profiling. Brent is known as one of the roughest areas around London, adding fuel to the fire.

A senior officer has since contacted one of the occupants to discuss the stop and gather feedback, with police open to further talks.
