Speeding Kills: Man Jailed After Tragic Pedestrian Death

Police are sounding the alarm about the deadly risks of speeding on UK roads. Their warning comes after the heart-breaking death of James Edward Cromack, who was killed by a speeding driver while crossing the road.

Young Driver Jailed for Dangerous Driving

James, 40, died after being hit on Dewsbury Road, Tingley, on 23 February last year. The crash happened at a busy junction with Skye Road.

The driver, 20-year-old Abdullah Mota from Batley, was caught doing 60mph in a 40mph zone. Today, he was handed a hefty prison term of 3 years and 6 months at Leeds Crown Court. Mota was also banned from driving for 4 years and 9 months.

Tragic Loss Hits Family Hard

“James was our best friend who always brought positivity and hope,” said his family. Despite living with Cerebral Palsy, James never let his disability stop him. He was a keen sports fan, supporting Leeds Rhinos and captaining the local snooker team.

“Losing James has left a hole in our lives – a world without him is a sadder, duller place.”

He even donated his organs after the crash, hoping to save others and give life a chance.

Police Urge Drivers to Slow Down

Lead Investigator Detective Constable Clare Barran said:

“Speed was the key factor in this tragedy. I see too often the devastating impact speeding can have – on drivers, passengers, and innocent pedestrians alike.

“James’ family have made it clear: no one thinks speeding will cause harm until it does. But it always does.”

West Yorkshire Police are backing their #WYPTheCost campaign which highlights the brutal consequences of the “Fatal 4” offences – speeding, phone use, drink or drug-driving, and not wearing a seatbelt.

Families Plead for Change

James’ family added:

“We live with the pain every day. If raising awareness stops even one family from losing a loved one like we did, it’s worth it.”

This tragic case is a stark reminder: smash the limits, and you risk ruining lives – including your own.
