Met Police Officers Under Investigation Over Maida Vale Stop
Five Met police officers are under investigation after a vehicle stop in Maida Vale sparked a social media outcry. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has served the officers misconduct notices, but no gross misconduct allegations have been made.
What Happened During the Stop?
On Saturday, 4 July, officers from the Territorial Support Group stopped a vehicle on Lanhill Road carrying a 25-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman. Both occupants were searched with nothing found. They were allowed to carry on their journey, and no arrests were made.
Initial Police Review Finds No Serious Breach
The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards reviewed bodycam footage, social media clips, and incident details. They initially found no evidence serious enough to warrant formal disciplinary action against the officers.
Social Media Post Fuels Public Complaint
After the female occupant tagged the Met in a social media post on 7 July, the matter was registered as a public complaint. The Met voluntarily referred the case to the IOPC due to public interest and transparency concerns.
IOPC Launches Independent Probe
The IOPC’s detailed investigation led to five officers being formally investigated for misconduct. The Met believes that if any breaches are proven, they would likely be minor and more suitable for reflective practice rather than full disciplinary proceedings. Notably, no officers have been suspended or had duties restricted.
The Met confirms it is fully cooperating with the ongoing IOPC inquiry.
