Extra Cash to Ease Police Burden on Covid Curfew Patrols
Funding Boost for Wiltshire Police
Wiltshire and Swindon Police and Crime Commissioner Angus Macpherson has welcomed new funding aimed at easing police pressure during the 10pm Covid curfew. He revealed police forces have been grappling with extra duties amid already soaring demand.
Local Authorities to Step Up
The cash injection will help local councils better manage licensing duties. “This means officers won’t have to spend as much time policing the curfew,” Macpherson explained. Instead, police can target bigger problems like anti-social behaviour and illegal large gatherings.
Covid Marshals to Patrol Hotspots
Macpherson says the funds might also bankroll COVID marshals – a potential game-changer. These marshals will patrol busy town centres and parks, helping spot hotspots and provide crucial backup, easing the strain on police.
No Instant Police Recruitment Windfall
While the Chief Constable has already assigned PCSOs to focus on Covid rules enforcement, Macpherson warns the money won’t mean new officers overnight. “It could pay for overtime, but we mustn’t push our stretched force too far,” he said.
