Disqualified Driver Chased at 100mph on M5
Craig Gibbs, 32, was caught out after a high-speed police chase on the M5 near Bridgwater. Despite being banned from driving, he took a green Ford Focus for a deadly spin on Monday 5 October – and refused to stop when officers tried to pull him over.
Daring Escape Ends in Crash
Hitting speeds up to 100mph, Gibbs led officers on a wild pursuit from the M5 to Wellington and back. He exited at Junction 23, then ignored red lights and drove on the wrong side of the road trying to ditch the cops.
His desperate bid ended when he crashed into several cars on a side street. Police finally cornered him after his vehicle got wedged between parked cars. Despite trying to force his way through, Gibbs was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, and failing to stop for police.
Drugs and Dangerous Driving Land Him Behind Bars
Officers also found cannabis in Gibbs’ car. A drugs test confirmed he was unfit to drive. At Taunton Crown Court, he admitted dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, and possession of a class B drug.
Gibbs was jailed and banned from driving for four years and eight months.
Police Warn Against Reckless Driving
“Gibbs’ erratic and downright reckless driving last month put both himself and dozens of law-abiding motorists at risk,” said PC Sam Donati.
“Knowing he was disqualified from driving he attempted to evade police with no thought for anyone’s safety. I hope today’s court result acts as a deterrent to any drivers that getting behind the wheel and driving dangerously, especially when disqualified or under the influence, can lead to a significant sentence.”
