Huge Blaze on London Road Lorry Sparks Major Fire Response
At 8.20pm on Tuesday, fire crews were scrambled to a fierce fire on London Road, St Ives after a lorry burst into flames.
Over 20 Firefighters Battle Intense Blaze
More than 20 firefighters from Huntingdon, Papworth, Gamlingay, Cambridge, and Ramsey rushed to the scene, including a specialist water carrier. They arrived to find a well-developed fire engulfing the lorry.
Wearing breathing apparatus, crews tackled the flames head-on with hose reels and successfully extinguished the fire. Thankfully, no one was injured in the ordeal.
Chemical Cargo Means Long Cleanup & Road Closures
Firefighters remain at the scene damping down hot spots. Due to the chemical load on the lorry, a specialist cleanup operation is underway. This is expected to take several hours.
The blaze caused significant damage, meaning London Road will need resurfacing. Partial road closures will stay in place until early Wednesday, disrupting access to St Ives and the A1307.
Motorists and school run drivers are urged to plan alternative routes and expect delays.
