Devon & Cornwall Police Crack Down on COVID Rule Breakers
Devon & Cornwall Police reported over 2,000 COVID-related engagements with the public during the tough National Tier 4 period. From November 5 to December 1, officers dealt with 2,001 public interactions, 1,230 COVID-related calls, and handed out 172 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) for breaches.
Illegal Gatherings Top Callouts
- 95 FPNs were issued for indoor gatherings violating restrictions.
- 563 calls concerned illegal social gatherings.
As the region shifts to mixed Tier 1 and Tier 2 rules, police urge everyone to respect their community and keep following safety measures to protect themselves and others.
Police Praise Compliant Locals, Warn Against Complacency
Assistant Chief Constable Glen Mayhew said: “The last month has been tough for all our communities and for our own staff. The vast majority have complied and respected regulations designed to keep everyone safe.”
“Our 2,000-plus engagements show the public value police visibility and reassurance over immediate enforcement.”
“57% of interactions were proactively initiated by officers and PCSOs to foster conversations rather than just issue fines.”
“Where necessary, we’ve issued fines reasonably and proportionately, but mostly advice and encouragement have been enough.”
New Tier Split Poses Policing Challenge
Devon & Cornwall is one of just two forces in England with areas split between Tiers 1 and 2 from December 2. Dedicated COVID patrol cars will roll throughout December, focusing on the 4Es: Engagement, Encouragement, Education, and Enforcement (the final resort).
ACC Mayhew added: “Managing two tiers is tricky but our approach stays steady. Don’t fear the tiers—know your responsibilities and follow the rules.”
He stressed: “Anyone from Tier 2 entering Tier 1 areas like Cornwall must follow the stricter rules. This doesn’t mean automatic fines but requires respect, vigilance, and hygiene to help prevent COVID spread.”
Mayhew concluded: “With Christmas relaxation from December 23-27 already announced, this is a crucial time to stick to regulations. Your cooperation means fewer cases, quicker easing of restrictions, and a safer return to normal life for Devon and Cornwall.”
