Son admits stabbing mum to death but blames mental illness

Guilty plea at Old Bailey

Jamal Sealy, 31, from Lewisham Way, SE14, pleaded guilty to manslaughter with diminished responsibility at the Old Bailey on Friday, 8 January. The court handed him an indefinite hospital order under Sections 37 and 41 of the Mental Health Act.

Horrific attack inside police station

On the evening of 10 June 2020, at around 9pm, Sealy walked into Walworth Police Station and confessed to officers that he had stabbed his mother. Police quickly arrested him and found 58-year-old Dawn Bennett at their home, seriously injured.

Mother dies on birthday

Dawn Bennett was rushed to a south London hospital but tragically died six days later, on 16 June – her 59th birthday. Medical experts revealed Sealy was suffering from severe paranoid beliefs at the time.

Murder charge dropped

Sealy denied murder but accepted manslaughter due to diminished responsibility, sealing his fate in court.
