For the second week running, Wiltshire Police have slammed over 50 fines on lockdown rule-breakers. From February 1st to 7th, officers issued 52 fixed penalty notices (FPNs), pushing the total fines handed out since the pandemic began to a hefty 509.
Warnings, Reports, and COVID Crimes Add Up
- 108 formal warnings issued to rule-breakers, including three businesses caught flouting restrictions.
- 19 engagement interactions recorded by police.
- 299 reports from the public, through phone and online tips.
- Seven COVID-related crimes and 50 incidents logged.
Top Brass Warn of Complacency Amid Vaccine Hopes
Deputy Chief Constable Paul Mills voiced concern that lockdown fatigue is setting in. “This third national lockdown has been tough for everyone,” he said. “But some might be getting complacent, either worn down by restrictions or lulled by the vaccine rollout’s promise.”
“We must remember: the pandemic is far from over. New virus strains mean the risk remains high. Now is no time to be lax. Stay home unless it’s essential, or face fines.”
Wiltshire Police vow to keep patrolling and tackling the small minority who continue to ignore the rules.
Police Chief Calls for Continued Vigilance
Police and Crime Commissioner Angus Macpherson offered a stark reality check. “Nearly a year in, and with dark winter months biting, this lockdown is tough. But if we want normal life back, everyone must play their part.”
“The more people break rules, the worse the virus spreads. Think carefully. Limit social contact. It’s the only way forward.”
