Solar Panel Scam Hits Kent – Load Worth Thousands Vanishes
In a daring theft straight out of a crime thriller, a huge shipment of solar panels destined for a UK firm mysteriously disappeared in Kent back in March 2021. The panels, imported by a foreign company specialising in solar sales, never reached their intended destination.
Load Redirected to Ashford – Then Vanishes Without a Trace
Instead of delivery to the UK buyer, lorries carrying the valuable solar panels were allegedly rerouted to an industrial unit in Ashford. Since then, the entire shipment has vanished — and crucially, without payment.
Police Launch Fraud Probe – Two Arrested in Connection
Kent Police’s Volume Fraud Team is hot on the case. On Wednesday 17 March 2021, officers swooped on a business unit in Henwood, Ashford, arresting two men suspected of conspiracy to steal.
- A 50-year-old from Essex
- A 23-year-old from Havering
Both suspects have been bailed until 15 April pending further enquiries.
Detective Warns Businesses: Beware Distribution Fraud
“Scammers are getting clever, pretending to be well-known companies to bag expensive goods,” said Detective Sergeant Marc Cananur. “They place fake orders to get goods delivered, promising payment that never comes. Then the items disappear.”
“This scam hits overseas and UK companies alike. Always verify delivery addresses, phone numbers and email domains before shipping. Look up the company online and demand upfront payment, especially for first-time orders.”
Businesses are urged to stay vigilant and spot the fakes before they lose out big time.
