Violent Luton Thief Jailed After Brutal Vodka Store Attack
Karl Walsh, 45, from Eaton Green Road, Luton, has been locked up for nine years after a vicious attack in a convenience store. The thug was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent, assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH), and two counts of theft.
Vodka Theft Turns Violent
On the morning of 21 June, Walsh stormed into a Kimpton Road shop just after 9.30am. He grabbed a bottle of vodka and tried to flee without paying. When a staff member blocked his escape, Walsh punched him twice before smashing the bottle over his head.
The victim suffered serious injuries but was saved thanks to quick-thinking staff and a brave passerby who held Walsh until the police arrived.
Caught on Camera in Second Theft
Police linked Walsh to a previous theft after spotting him on CCTV at a building materials store on Gypsy Lane, Luton, on 4 June. Carrying gardening gear in a rucksack and a strimmer on his electric scooter’s handlebars, he tried sneaking out via a fire exit, setting off the alarm.
A member of the public stopped Walsh, but he lashed out, striking one brave individual on the chin with the scooter before making his getaway.
Long Jail Sentence for Dangerous Crook
- 9 years for GBH with intent
- 12 months for assault causing actual bodily harm
- 6 months for each theft count (running concurrently)
Detective Constable Michael Wallis praised the courageous staff and public: “Walsh is a violent and unpredictable individual who didn’t hesitate to seriously hurt someone just to avoid paying for vodka.”
