Huddersfield Man Jailed for 8 Years Over Child Sex Crimes Planned in London
James Ritchie, 30, from Huddersfield, has been locked up for eight years after plotting to sexually abuse children in London. The engineering graduate travelled over 190 miles to the capital with chilling intentions to commit horrific crimes.
Chilling Online Chats Lead to Sting
Ritchie was caught after contacting a covert online profile he believed would help him access underage victims. In graphic messages, he detailed his planned abuse and even boasted about past offences. He sent intimate pictures of himself, demanding they be shown to the children beforehand.
Worryingly, Ritchie had added a ‘kill switch’ to his phone designed to wipe all evidence if caught — but police seized his phone unlocked, foiling his plans.
Snapped Up at London Meeting Point
After weeks of sickening conversations across messaging platforms, Ritchie agreed to fly to London to carry out his abuses over a weekend stay. On 10 July 2020, he was arrested on arrival in Clapham by Met officers.
Police searches of his Huddersfield home uncovered a stash of indecent images including the most extreme Category A child abuse images.
Strong Sentence and Lifelong Sex Offender Registration
At Inner London Crown Court on 21 May, Ritchie was handed an immediate eight-year custodial sentence. He was charged with arranging child sex offences and possession of indecent images.
PC Gurpreet Singh from the Met’s Online Child Sexual Abuse & Exploitation Command said:
“Ritchie is a dangerous individual who admitted he might not control himself around children under six. Our painstaking investigation has resulted in this robust conviction. He will remain on the sex offender register for life. We want victims to know help is available.”
