Ex-Teacher Anthony Shenton Jailed for Decades-Old Child Sex Abuses

Anthony Shenton, 82, from Aldenham, appeared at St Albans Crown Court where he was sentenced for multiple historic sex crimes against boys. After a four-day trial, a jury found him guilty of four fresh offences.

Shocking Crimes Spanned Decades

  • Found guilty of two indecent assaults, one buggery charge, and one indecency offence from the 1970s and 1980s
  • Previously admitted 15 counts including indecent assault and gross indecency against seven male pupils
  • Crimes took place between 1968 and 1984

Shenton taught design technology and games at Langleybury School in Hunton Bridge from the mid-1960s until the school closed in 1996. His victims, aged 11 to 15, were abused in various places — his flat in Abbots Langley, school grounds, after-school clubs, and during school trips like canoeing and skiing.

Detective Commends Victims’ Courage

“Shenton used his position of trust to groom and sexually exploit young boys for his own gratification,” said Detective Constable Liz McGrath of Hertfordshire’s Historic Child Abuse Investigation Unit.

“Despite some victims saying Shenton admitted his wrongdoing at the time, he continued offending.

The victims have carried the trauma their entire lives. Their bravery in coming forward has ensured Shenton finally faces justice.”

Judge Slams ‘Calculating and Predatory’ Abuser

Her Honour Judge Caroline Wiggin branded Shenton as “calculating and predatory” during sentencing. She praised the victims’ bravery and recognised the lasting trauma caused by his actions.

Detective McGrath also received a commendation for exceptional victim care during the complex investigation.
