UK Gears Up for Green Transport Revolution in Scotland

Transport Minister Richard Holden has unveiled bold plans to turbocharge Scotland’s economy and connectivity with cutting-edge green transport. During his visit to Glasgow on 3 April 2023, Holden showcased government-backed innovations like hydrogen-powered, self-driving trucks set to hit UK roads soon.

Glasgow Leading the Charge with £16m Hydrogen Truck Project

Holden toured Glasgow’s trailblazing tech, where £16 million in funding is fuelling development of eco-friendly, autonomous trucks. These vehicles promise safer roads, higher productivity, and a cleaner environment — driving the UK closer to its net zero goal by 2050.

Ravenscraig Regeneration Sparks Jobs and Growth Bonanza

Next stop for Holden was Ravenscraig, where a massive £127 million investment funded by the UK and Scottish governments plus North Lanarkshire Council is reshaping transport links. The facelift will boost connectivity, create thousands of jobs, and encourage greener travel like walking and cycling.

Estimated to generate 4,600 construction jobs and pump £626 million into the local economy, Ravenscraig’s revival is part of the £1 billion Glasgow City Region Deal — a major infrastructure boost for the city and surrounds.

Ministers Pledge Continued Push on Sustainable Transport

“Innovation like this in Scotland will help the UK become a world-leading next-generation transport hub by protecting the environment and meeting our global ambitions,” said Minister Holden.

“Boosting transport connections across the UK will grow the economy and ensure that everyone no matter where they live has access to well-paid, high-quality jobs.”

UK Minister for Scotland John Lamont added: “UK government investment is helping power Scotland into the fast lane of sustainable transport innovation and delivering improved connectivity – levelling up the UK and bringing communities closer together.

From hydrogen trucks to revamped rail, cycling, walking, and new ferry services, we’re improving journeys, boosting growth, and protecting the environment.”

“There’s more to be done and we are committed to working closely with the Scottish Government and local partners to deliver what travellers want and businesses need.”

Holden also discussed ideas with local businesses on expanding road, rail, and flight links between Scotland and the rest of the UK to turbocharge growth. Research shows 60% of people believe better UK-wide transport would benefit their nation.

Following Scotland, the minister is set to visit Northern Ireland and Wales to further promote sustainable connectivity projects.
