Predator Sentenced for Childhood Sexual Abuse Decades Later
Shahid Walayat began abusing a six-year-old girl back in 1989. At just 16, he inappropriately touched the victim at a house in Wakefield. The abuse stopped before 1992, and the victim lost contact with Walayat after his 1993 conviction for the murder of Julia Baines. He was jailed for life but released in 2018.
Justice Delayed, But Not Denied
In 2018, the victim bravely reported the abuse to West Yorkshire Police. Walayat, now 48 and living in Dewsbury, faced trial at Leeds Crown Court. On 8 December 2021, a jury found him guilty of four counts of Indecent Assault and one count of Indecency with a Child. He was jailed for six years and hit with an indefinite restraining order to protect the victim.
Police Praise Victim’s Courage
“Walayat is a dangerous sexual predator who targeted a defenceless child,” said Detective Sue Marshall. “The victim was very courageous to come forward, especially facing cultural barriers, and seek justice for what he did.
“We are pleased he now faces the consequences for a crime he thought he could escape. We hope this sentence brings closure to our victim.”
Detective Marshall added: “We are ready to listen to anyone wanting to report similar offences. We will support you fully and investigate all leads to bring offenders to justice.”
