Met Police Officer Headbutts Bar Manager in London Cocktail Bar
A serving Metropolitan Police officer has been sentenced after violently headbutting a bar manager at a cocktail bar in Monument, London.
Officer Sentenced for Assault After Bar Fracas
Luke Wilson, 28, from Gravesend, was handed a 10-week suspended prison sentence and 80 hours of unpaid community service at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 29 March 2022. He must also pay £700 in court costs, £200 in compensation to the victim, and a victim surcharge.
Wilson was found guilty of common assault and battery following a one-day trial on 9 March 2022.
Unprovoked Attack Shakes Trust in Police
“This was an unprovoked assault on a victim who was simply trying to do his job,” said Temporary Detective Constable MacLennan. “The victim felt he could trust the group due to their profession, but his trust in the police has now been damaged by this attack.
“I hope that the sentence passed down today brings some justice to the victim and demonstrates that no one is exempt when it comes to upholding the law in the City.”
Bar Manager Enforces COVID Rules, Faces Brutal Reaction
The assault happened on Friday, 2 July 2021, when Wilson and a group of off-duty officers visited a cocktail bar near Monument.
- The group arrived around 7.30pm but were told there were too many of them due to coronavirus restrictions.
- The bar manager allowed them in but insisted they split across different tables, to comply with the “rule of six” limit.
- CCTV footage showed the group ignored this and ended up with ten people at one table.
- The bar manager confronted Wilson, asking four people to move elsewhere.
- Wilson followed, but instead of cooperating, he squared up to the manager and headbutted him, causing minor injuries.
Wilson Denies Assault Despite CCTV Evidence
Wilson was interviewed the next day and denied the attack, claiming he felt threatened by the manager. However, CCTV showed the victim standing calmly, hands in pockets, exhibiting no aggression.
Confronted with this footage, Wilson refused to comment further.
This incident highlights that not even police officers are above the law – especially when violent behaviour is involved.
