Deadly Prison Riot in Mogadishu: Eight Killed in Gun Battle
At least eight people died on Saturday in a violent clash at Mogadishu’s main prison in Somalia. Gunfire erupted after armed inmates, believed to be al-Shabab militants, tried a daring escape bid. The deadly showdown left five prisoners and three soldiers dead, officials confirmed.
Al-Shabab Terrorists Behind Prison Break Attempt
Colonel Abdiqani Khalaf, spokesperson for the Somali army’s custodial corps, said: “Violent elements tried to stir terror in the central prison.” Eighteen inmates and three soldiers were wounded, but no one managed to flee.
Security sources revealed that the escape attempt was a well-planned operation by al-Shabab fighters — the al-Qaeda-linked terror group that has waged war against Somalia’s government for over 17 years.
Explosions and Gunfire Rock the Prison
Local witnesses reported hearing grenade blasts and loud gunfire. One said, “There was an explosion inside the prison and heavy fighting followed.” Another witness recounted calls to a prison guard confirming that inmates smuggled weapons and grenades for the breakout attempt.
Somalia National Television confirmed security forces had ended the operation, taking down “terrorists who were sentenced to death” after they attacked guards.
Ongoing Battle Against Al-Shabab Militants
Al-Shabab has been responsible for countless bombings and attacks across Somalia. The government, backed by local armed groups, African Union forces, and US airstrikes, continues to fight the terror threat. However, the insurgents recently seized multiple areas in central Somalia, highlighting the persistent instability.
This brutal prison clash underscores the immense security challenges Mogadishu faces as it battles insurgency and strives to maintain control.
