Two Swimmers Rescued After Becoming Trapped by Strong Currents Near Albion Groyne
Two swimmers got into serious trouble after drifting near the infamous Albion Groyne, where strong, fixed currents made it impossible to swim back to shore.
They clung desperately to the pier’s stanchions as lifeguards on duty plunged into the icy water to save them.
Hypothermia and Injuries After Dangerous Call for Help
Both victims suffered hypothermia and bore cuts and grazes from barnacles clinging to the pier. One showed signs of swallowing water, raising serious health concerns.
Ambulance crews were quickly woken and rushed to treat the pair, while local coastguard teams were called in to assist.
Seafront Team Issues Stark Warning
Please do not enter the water and swim near large groynes,” warned the Brighton & Hove Seafront Team. “They create dangerous situations. Swim between the Red and Yellow Flags! Congratulations to all involved guards!”
