Veteran’s Trust Betrayed: Conman Steals Hundreds from WWII Hero

Raymond Whitwell, a WWII veteran who escaped capture in occupied France and fought bravely in North Africa and Arnhem, was left betrayed by a trusted acquaintance.

From £10-an-Hour Work to Bank Card Theft

Whitwell employed Morgan for odd jobs, paying him £10 an hour. But Morgan repeatedly asked for small loans. Trusting him, Whitwell even handed over his bank card.

Morgan then drained hundreds of pounds, spending it on alcohol and gambling. Whitwell only found out after receiving his bank statement.

Police Nab Thief with 42 Past Convictions

With his neighbours’ help, Whitwell alerted the police. Officers caught Morgan and searched his home, where they found a brown envelope addressed to Whitwell. Inside was a medal marking the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Morgan’s criminal record spans decades, with 42 convictions for over 80 offences, mainly theft and alcohol-related crimes since the mid-1990s.

Judge Slams Morgan as ‘Disgraceful’

He was sentenced to 15 months behind bars. The judge condemned his actions as “disgraceful,” adding insult to injury for the war hero who deserved respect, not robbery.
