Decade-Old Mystery Solved: Skeleton Found in Scrapyard Identified as Bill Long

Back in April 2019, a site worker stumbled upon human remains in a scrapyard near Cockett Wick Lane. For three years, police worked tirelessly to crack the case and identify the skeleton.

Now, officers have confirmed the remains belong to Bill Long, a man in his 70s from Tendring. The mystery surrounding his death has taken a shocking turn.

Forensic Experts and Detective Work Lead to ID

  • Forensic anthropologists helped pin down when Bill died.
  • Police combed through hundreds of missing person reports, NHS and financial records.
  • They even followed up on tips from media appeals over the years.
  • Photos of cowboy boots found with the remains were released to jog memories.

Detective Inspector Kevin Hughes said, “The process of locating Bill was measured and methodical. Bill’s family has been informed, and they now have the opportunity to lay him to rest. Our priority is to find answers for them.”

Clues Point to Possible Homicide

Bill was last seen between March 1999 and March 2000. He reportedly had a girlfriend who moved to Australia around that time. Police are investigating his death as a possible homicide but remain open to other explanations.

Detectives are now zeroing in on how Bill ended up dumped in that scrapyard and what happened in his final days.

Family Plea for Answers

Bill’s sister Patricia begged the public, “We lost contact with Bill after our father died in 1996 and we’re desperate for information about what happened to him. He was vulnerable and an easy target for scammers. It’s heartbreaking not knowing the truth.”

“If anyone knew Bill or saw him in those years, please come forward. You can remain anonymous if you wish.”
