Son Jailed for Life After Brutal Murder of 85-Year-Old Mum in Burnley
Mumtaz Ahmed, 44, from Prairie Crescent, Burnley, has been locked up for life after the horrific killing of his elderly mother, Inayat Begum, 85. The tragic discovery was made early on April 24, 2022, when emergency services found Mrs Begum with severe head injuries at their home.
Mother Found Dead at Home
Police were called by the Ambulance Service around 3.30am following reports of a woman with head injuries. Sadly, Mrs Begum was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ahmed was present when officers arrived and was immediately arrested after his story failed to add up. The post-mortem revealed Mrs Begum died from head, chest, and abdominal injuries, believed to have been caused by a weapon.
Trial Ends in Life Sentence
Ahmed denied the murder charge but was convicted after a trial at Preston Crown Court. He was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 22 years behind bars.
Police Condemn Son’s “Cruel and Wicked” Act
Detective Chief Inspector Rachel Higson of Lancashire Police’s Force Major Investigation Team said: “Mumtaz Ahmed is a violent, aggressive man who preyed on his elderly mother.
“His cruel and wicked actions robbed relatives of a much-loved family member. Mrs Begum was described as a thoughtful, caring member of the community who had nothing but kindness for others.
“Ahmed has attempted to conceal his despicable actions through a web of lies, showing no remorse for his brutal actions resulting in the murder of his mother.
“My thoughts remain with Mrs Begum’s loved ones at this time. It is hoped that this verdict will bring some closure and enable the family to grieve in peace.
“We welcome Ahmed’s imprisonment, which will give him considerable time to reflect on the gravity of his actions.”
