Dog Photo Snaps Up Drug Gang’s Downfall!
How a Pet Pic Cracked the Case
Danny Brown, 55, went by the handle ‘throwthedice’ on the encrypted EncroChat network. But his big mistake? Sending a photo of his pet dog, Bob – complete with his partner’s phone number on the collar tag – to co-conspirator Stefan Baldauf, 62. That snap became key evidence in a massive plot to smuggle 448 kilos of MDMA worth £45 million into Australia.
National Crime Agency (NCA) sleuths zoomed in on the phone details and, combined with painstaking detective work, nailed Brown’s role in the conspiracy. Bob was even with Brown when he was arrested!
Selfies, Diggers and a Dodgy Auction
Brown and Baldauf also slipped up by sending accidental selfies on EncroChat, giving investigators more proof. Their cunning plan involved hiding the huge stash of drugs inside the arm of a 40-tonne industrial digger.
- The excavator, a Doosan DX420 bought for €75,000, was shipped to Australia under the guise of a sale.
- They organised a fake online auction in Sydney, rigged with pre-arranged bids to keep the deal looking legit.
- OCG member Leon Reilly fretted on EncroChat when six unexpected bidders showed interest: “F***ing hell, that’s not good is it.”
The gang even used shell companies and paid haulage firms £1,600 to move the digger from Leeds to Southampton Docks, before it sailed down under.
Operation Venetic: EncroChat Crackdown
EncroChat was shut down in 2020. The NCA’s Operation Venetic then swooped, grabbing secret chats from the platform’s users who thought they were untouchable. These criminals only used nicknames, so cops had to painstakingly match handles to real people.
Brown’s selfies and Baldauf’s reflected face in a door sign gave the NCA the breaks they needed. The gang’s own messages – from rigging auctions to detailed maps of the digger’s drug hideout – left no doubt about their guilt.
26 Years for the Gang, Thanks to Bob
Brown, Baldauf, and Reilly were convicted in June at Kingston Crown Court along with three others. Today, Brown got 26 years, Baldauf 28, and Reilly 24 behind bars. Other key members, including Philip Lawson, who engineered the drug hide with lead lining, also received hefty sentences.
Chris Hill, NCA operations manager, said: “These men thought they were safe on EncroChat but my officers did a superb and painstaking job building the evidence. Brown and Baldauf’s accidental selfies and the photo of Bob were the cherry on the cake in proving their identities.”
The elaborate conspiracy from late 2019 to early 2020 exposed the UK gang’s attempt to cash in on Australia’s booming MDMA market, where drugs fetch a far higher price than on UK streets.
With the drug stash discovered and the criminals locked up, Bob the dog’s unwitting cameo helped smash one of the biggest international drug hauls ever.
