Man Sentenced to Nine Years in Prison for Killing Northern Ireland Tattoo Artist – UKNIP

A man has been given a minimum of nine years in prison for the killing of Aidan Mann, a well-known tattoo artist in Northern Ireland. The 28-year-old artist, also known as Zen Black, was brutally stabbed 14 times on Church Street in Downpatrick in January 2022. The court determined that Mann was an entirely innocent victim who did nothing to provoke the fatal attack.

Barry Donnelly, 38, residing on Church Street in Downpatrick, pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. He received an indeterminate custodial sentence at Belfast Crown Court on Tuesday, with the judge stating that Donnelly must serve a minimum of nine years before being considered for release.

Following the sentencing hearing, Mann’s mother, Sonya Mann, expressed the devastating impact her son’s death had on their family. She stated that Donnelly “stole my life when he killed my son” and described how he chased her son down the street like an animal. She spoke of the fear and suffering her son must have endured, expressing that it would never leave her.

During a previous hearing, it was revealed that Donnelly had been “actively psychotic” at the time of the attack. He also pleaded guilty to possession of offensive weapons and assault occasioning actual bodily harm relating to a previous attack on a mother and son in June 2021.

CCTV footage presented in court traced Donnelly’s movements on the day of Mann’s death. Although they were neighbors, they barely knew each other. The footage showed Donnelly pursuing Mann, who was wearing a motorcycle helmet, along Church Street. The chase continued, and at one point, Mann turned around and gestured at Donnelly before crossing the road into oncoming traffic.

The CCTV footage then captured Donnelly catching up with Mann outside a car dealership, where he stabbed him multiple times in the chest, leg, and torso while straddling him on the ground. Members of the public intervened, pulled Donnelly off Mann, and called emergency services. Donnelly was apprehended while still being restrained by the public, and two large kitchen knives used in the attack were seized at the scene.

Donnelly falsely claimed at the scene that the attack was a revenge act for his brother’s murder the previous evening. However, it was later determined that this claim was completely untrue. Donnelly was admitted to a psychiatric unit following the killing due to an abnormality of mental functioning arising from schizophrenia. While a psychiatrist indicated that he would likely not require further treatment, Donnelly’s defense barrister informed the court that his client had not been aware of his acute mental illness until after the “terrible act” resulting in Mann’s death. He expressed Donnelly’s regret, remorse, and heartbreak.

PSNI Detective Inspector Foreman described the attack as “senseless” and expressed gratitude to those who came to Mann’s aid and alerted emergency services. The detective acknowledged that no words could undo the tragic events and extended condolences to those who knew and loved Aidan Mann.
