Wagner Mercenaries Spill Into Belarus After Mutiny Shake-Up

Explosive news from the border! Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service (DPSU) has confirmed that Russia’s notorious Wagner mercenaries have crossed into Belarus from Russia. A convoy of around 60 vehicles is reported to have rolled over the border early Saturday, although official numbers and locations are still being verified.

From Rebellion to Relocation: The Wagner Mutiny Fallout

This move follows a recent dramatic 24-hour mutiny by Wagner forces in Russia, which rattled President Vladimir Putin’s grip on power. The rebel troops seized a city and nearly marched on Moscow before being stopped just 200 kilometres out. To end the chaos, Wagner fighters were offered a stark choice: integrate into the Russian army or relocate to Belarus, Putin’s close ally.

The Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin was reportedly offered safe haven in Belarus as well, but his current whereabouts remain a mystery.

Belarus Prepares with Wagner as Military Trainers

Belarus’ Defence Ministry confirmed on Friday that Wagner troops are acting as military instructors, training local territorial defence forces near Osipovichy, some 85 km southeast of Minsk. A Belarusian opposition blogger’s Telegram channel claimed the convoy was escorted by Belarusian traffic police heading to the same region—though Belarusian authorities have yet to comment.

Wagner’s Murky Status and Putin’s Tough Choices

Wagner mercenaries, many recruited from Russian prisons, have been front and centre in Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine since February last year. President Putin recently revealed that Prigozhin declined the offer for his fighters to join the Russian army as regular soldiers. While some commanders supported the idea, the leader’s refusal exposed cracks within the group.

Putin also acknowledged that Wagner is not officially recognised under Russian law due to their mercenary status—but suggested this legal grey area should be sorted out in parliament.

Ukraine’s border guards remain on high alert, keeping a close watch on Wagner’s movements in Belarus as tensions simmer on the northern front.
