A 31-year-old man, identified as Marcus Hamlin, has been sentenced to 14 years and 6 months in prison for a horrific stabbing incident that took place in the Manor area of Sheffield last summer.
On the evening of August 30, 2022, members of the public contacted the police after discovering a woman in her 30s injured on Harborough Way. Responding officers arrived at the scene to find the woman with serious stab wounds and were informed that a child had potentially been killed. They swiftly located the child in a nearby property, where they found the child suffering from a substantial head wound.
Marcus Hamlin, who had sustained an injury to his wrist, was located nearby and promptly arrested. While first aid was provided to Hamlin, additional officers entered the property to assist police and ambulance staff in caring for the seriously injured child.
All three individuals were transported to the hospital for treatment before Hamlin was taken into custody. He was later charged with two counts of attempted murder.
Detective Constable Hannah Bryan, who led the investigation, expressed the relentless efforts made by the investigative team to reconstruct the events leading up to and during the attack. Testimonies revealed that Hamlin initially targeted the woman before proceeding to assault the child when the woman cried out for help.
“The victims sustained over 30 injuries, primarily inflicted with a kitchen knife and a meat cleaver,” stated DC Bryan.
She further added, “The lives of all those affected were irrevocably changed in the course of one evening. Although both victims have physically recovered from their significant injuries, the psychological impact of that night’s events will continue to affect them. Nevertheless, I hope that today’s sentencing brings them some measure of closure.”
Hamlin, formerly residing on Dawlands Close in Sheffield, appeared at Sheffield Crown Court on Tuesday, July 18, to receive his sentence. He had previously pleaded guilty to two counts of Section 18 Wounding during an earlier hearing.
