Three Caught Red-Handed After Closure Order Ignored in Newark
Police and Newark and Sherwood District Council acted fast, slapping a 48-hour closure notice on a property on Wednesday, 19 July. But just hours later, two men aged 58 and 28, plus a 38-year-old woman, were found inside, blatantly flouting the order.
Three-Month Closure Order Now in Place
By Friday, Nottingham Magistrates’ Court had imposed a tough three-month closure order. The crack-down follows complaints about drug use, loud music, fighting, and arguments disturbing local residents.
It’s illegal to enter or stay on premises under a closure order without a good reason. Ignoring the notice can lead to fines, jail time, or both.
Crackdown on Anti-Social Behaviour
“We know this property and those visiting it were causing antisocial behaviour issues and concern to other residents in the community,” said Inspector Charlotte Ellam, District Commander for Newark and Sherwood.
“By teaming up with our partners at the council we secured the order to close it down and put a stop to criminal behaviour. Thanks to the hard work by my neighbourhood officers and the Newark Operation Reacher team, we’ve pulled the plug on a group of people blighting our community. Our determination to keep the property secure resulted in the arrest of three people only hours later.
“I want to send a strong message – we take all reports of antisocial behaviour extremely seriously and will do everything possible to investigate, prosecute and work with partners to keep communities safe.”
Council Pledges Support to Troubled Residents
Councillor Lee Brazier, Portfolio Holder for Housing, warned: “No one should live in fear. Visitors to this property left neighbours intimidated and fearful of reprisals. Our staff are here to help and can speak to you in confidence.”
