A significant fire broke out on Coldharbour Lane in Hayes – UKNIP

A significant fire broke out on Coldharbour Lane in Hayes, prompting the response of ten fire engines and approximately 70 firefighters to combat the blaze. The fire, which occurred in a single-storey shop extension, resulted in the destruction of the structure. The incident also led to damage to part of some garages and the roof of a neighbouring property. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in connection with the incident.

Firefighters worked diligently to control the blaze, and road closures were put in place to ensure public safety. Authorities urged members of the public to avoid the area as firefighting operations were carried out.

Upon investigation, the fire is being classified as accidental and is believed to have been caused by the improper disposal of smoking materials. The London Fire Brigade emphasized the importance of proper smoking habits, emphasizing that fully extinguishing cigarettes is crucial to preventing such incidents.

A spokesperson from the London Fire Brigade emphasized the potential dangers, stating, “We’d rather you didn’t smoke at all, but if you are a smoker, it’s absolutely vital you ensure your cigarette is completely out when you’ve finished smoking it. If you don’t, you risk causing a fire which could not only destroy properties but also cost you your life.”

The incident drew a considerable response, with 27 emergency calls being received by the Brigade’s 999 Control Officers. The fire was reported at 17:22 and brought under control by 19:11. Firefighting teams from Hayes, Hillingdon, Heathrow, Feltham, and surrounding stations joined efforts to tackle the blaze and manage the situation.

The London Fire Brigade also provided essential safety tips for smokers to prevent fire incidents:

  • Use proper ashtrays that cannot tip over and ensure cigarettes are stubbed out completely.
  • Avoid leaving lit pipes or cigarettes unattended.
  • If smoking outdoors, ensure cigarettes are extinguished and properly disposed of.
  • Never balance cigars or cigarettes on the edge of an ashtray or any other surface.
  • Exercise caution when smoking while tired, taking prescription drugs, or consuming alcohol.
  • Empty ashtrays carefully and ensure smoking materials are out, cold, and ideally wet before disposing of them.

The incident underscores the significance of responsible smoking habits and the potential consequences of neglecting proper extinguishing and disposal practices.
