A huge fire ripped through a single-storey shop extension on Coldharbour Lane, Hayes, sending 70 firefighters and ten fire engines rushing to the scene. The inferno gutted the structure and damaged nearby garages plus the roof of a neighbouring home.
Thankfully, no one was hurt in the blaze.
Firefighters Battle Blaze and Close Roads
The London Fire Brigade scrambled crews from Hayes, Hillingdon, Heathrow, Feltham, and surrounding areas. After 27 emergency calls, the fire was reported at 5.22pm and finally brought under control by 7.11pm.
Road closures were enforced to keep the public safe while firefighters tackled the flames.
Fire Caused by Careless Cigarette Disposal, Warns Fire Brigade
Investigations reveal the blaze started accidentally due to improper disposal of smoking materials. The London Fire Brigade stressed the dangers of careless smoking, urging smokers to fully extinguish their cigarettes to prevent similar fires.
“We’d rather you didn’t smoke at all, but if you are a smoker, it’s absolutely vital you ensure your cigarette is completely out when you’ve finished smoking it. If you don’t, you risk causing a fire which could not only destroy properties but also cost you your life,” a spokesperson said.
Top Safety Tips from London Fire Brigade for Smokers
- Use sturdy ashtrays that won’t tip over and stub out cigarettes completely.
- Never leave lit cigarettes or pipes unattended.
- If smoking outdoors, double-check your cigarette is extinguished before disposal.
- Don’t balance cigars or cigarettes on ashtray edges or unstable surfaces.
- Be extra cautious when smoking if tired, on medication, or after drinking alcohol.
- Empty ashtrays carefully and ensure smoking materials are cold and ideally soaked before throwing them away.
This fiery incident is a stark reminder: careless smoking can spark devastating blazes. Stay safe and go out with your cigarette fully snuffed.
