Pervert Jailed After Victim’s Heroic 999 Call Stops Assault in Sheffield
Brave Woman’s Quick Thinking Lands Rapist Behind Bars
Fernando Camutari, 41, has been locked up for a horrific sexual assault that took place in the early hours of June 8, 2019. The 21-year-old victim’s gutsy move to call 999 from his own phone while he was attacking her led to his swift arrest and conviction.
Caught Red-Handed at Home
The shocking attack happened at Camutari’s house on Mordaunt Road, Sheffield. Police arrived just as the pair stepped outside the property after his victim dialled emergency services under extreme duress. Camutari was arrested on the spot.
Denied Everything – But Evidence Crushes Lies
Throughout the trial, Camutari denied all allegations. He insisted the woman had never been in his home — despite clear CCTV footage showing otherwise. He also rejected claims of sexual contact, but forensic evidence brutally dismantled his story.
Sentenced to Nearly Seven Years for Rape and Assault
The four-day trial, from August 7 to 10, ended with the jury finding him guilty on all counts. He was slapped with a six-year and nine-month jail term for rape, plus three years for each sexual assault count, to run concurrently.
Police Praise Victim’s Courage and Call for Others to Speak Out
Detective Constable Tom Ryan of the Major Crime Unit hailed the victim’s bravery and quick thinking. “She’s endured a tough four years waiting for justice,” he said. “The forensic findings, 999 call, and CCTV left no doubt about Camutari’s guilt.”
DC Ryan urged other survivors of sexual assault to come forward, promising they would get support and justice. “We hope this verdict helps the victim take steps towards recovery,” he added.
