Tragic Ice Lake Deaths: Hero Boy Dies Saving Friends
Jack Johnson’s Brave Last Act
Jack Johnson, just 10, ran to save three boys trapped in a frozen lake in Solihull. None were from his family. His aunt, Charlotte McIlmurray, revealed on Facebook: “He ran and tried to save the other children.” Sadly, Jack and two other boys, aged eight and eleven, died. A fourth boy, six years old, remains critically ill in hospital.
Grandfather Dives In, But Tragedy Strikes
Family friend Dale Hewitt shared chilling details: Jack’s grandfather, Peter, rushed from his home and dived into the lake to help. But despite desperate efforts, the boys were pulled from the freezing water in cardiac arrest on Sunday afternoon. They were treated on-site before being rushed to hospital.
“It’s just heartbreaking for the family and will have a massive impact on the entire community,” said Hewitt, 29. “I have two children myself, and the screams of ‘Help!’ from the lake were excruciating.”
Community in Shock as Ice Gives Way
The incident happened at Babbs Mill Lake, West Midlands, where the ice suddenly cracked while children played. Witness Tommy Barnet, 10, told Sky News: “One got their legs stuck in the ice and then… his friends went to go and save him, but they all fell in.”
Initial police reports mistakenly suggested up to six children fell in, but authorities confirmed only four were involved. Superintendent Richard Harris described the scene as devastating, and the first officer’s desperate attempts to break the ice left him with mild hypothermia.
Heartbreaking Tributes and Calls for Safety
Locals gathered at the lake, laying flowers and sharing heartfelt messages. Katie O’Driscoll, a mother of four, said: “I know one of the boys — he was 11 and the first rescued but sadly died. It’s heartbreaking, especially so close to Christmas.”
Calls for better safety measures grew louder. “They should put railings all the way around it,” said Katie. Currently, railings only cover a small section of the lake. Despite the lake’s shallow depth of five feet, the ice proved deadly.
A touching tribute left at the scene reads:“To my friend Thomas, thank you for being there when I needed you. To me, you were like a brother. I really miss you.”
