Freemasons Rally to Support Ukrainian Refugees in Crisis
The Masonic Charitable Foundation (MCF) and the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE) are stepping in as Ukraine faces a massive refugee crisis. Over a million Ukrainians have fled their homes, with hundreds of thousands more displaced within the country. As the conflict worsens, trains out of major cities like Kyiv are packed, and desperate families endure freezing waits for days at border crossings.
Border Chaos and Growing Humanitarian Need
The UN Refugee Agency warns millions more could soon seek safety abroad. Neighboring countries like Poland, Moldova, Slovakia, and Romania are already confronting a huge refugee influx. Red Cross teams in these countries have rushed to set up temporary shelters. Poland’s Red Cross created centres housing up to 400 people, while Moldova’s shelter in Chisinau holds 800. Slovakia has erected tents at the Ubla border point to shelter arrivals.
Supplies and Shelter from Red Cross Volunteers
- Food, hygiene items, and warm clothing are being handed out by Red Cross teams.
- Romanian volunteers distribute essentials like water and aid along the border.
- In Hungary, 300 Red Cross volunteers prepare parcels and run first aid stations for new arrivals.
Freemasons’ Generous Boost to the Relief Effort
Freemasons across England and Wales have contributed to a major grant via the Masonic Charitable Foundation to support these urgent needs. Luke Tredget, Head of Emergencies at the Red Cross, thanked the Freemasons for their “generous grant” that funds critical aid.
“Most of those fleeing are women and children who have queued for up to 60 hours in sub-zero temperatures. They urgently need help and the Red Cross is doing everything possible on the ground.”
Les Hutchinson, Chief Executive of MCF, added:
“These poor people are cold, hungry and utterly exhausted. I’m proud Freemasons can provide the support they desperately need during this terrible crisis.”
