BBC Breakfast Hits 40 with Star-Studded Throwback Bash

BBC Breakfast is celebrating its 40th birthday in style! On January 17th, viewers will be taken on a nostalgic journey back to the very first show, complete with archive footage, fan favourites, and special guest appearances. For one morning only, the programme will revert to its original name – Breakfast Time.

Vintage Vibes: Classic Clock and Original Line-Up Return

Jon Kay and Sally Nugent will host a special edition from the iconic red sofa. At 6.30am, exactly when the first show aired, Jon will present a bespoke film uncovering the birth of Breakfast Time. Carol Kirkwood, the longest-serving team member and weather presenter, will share treasured memories dating back to when Frank Bough and Selina Scott were at the helm.

The celebrations continue with a dedicated half-hour Breakfast Time special at 8.30am. Joining Jon and Sally will be stars like Russel Grant, Debbie Rix, and Leo Sayer – a guest from the inaugural show. Weather legend Francis Wilson, the very first Breakfast Time weather presenter, will team up with Carol for a rare, nostalgic report. Jayne McCubbin will head to London’s Waterloo station to catch Diana Moran, AKA The Green Goddess, as she recreates her famous 80s morning keep-fit routine.

Behind the Scenes: The Battle for Britain’s Breakfast TV

David Sillito reveals the fierce rivalry with ITV to become the nation’s first breakfast programme. He’ll explore how Breakfast reshaped morning TV in the 80s and evolved into today’s powerhouse, drawing an average 1.3 million viewers daily.

Richard Frediani, BBC Breakfast Editor: “Life begins at 40… and what a 40 years it has been. BBC Breakfast is the UK’s number one choice every morning, so we want to celebrate this occasion in the best way possible, bringing back presenters, digging into archives, and marking history with some of our favourite TV moments from day one.”

Presenter Memories and Viewer Tributes

Since early January, fans have shared their favourite Breakfast moments. Presenters have also opened up about their experiences:

  • Charlie Stayt: “BBC Breakfast has always had a special relationship with the audience, and for 17 years I’ve been lucky to be part of that story.”
  • Naga Munchetty: “BBC Breakfast is a beating heart of the BBC. We educate, inform and entertain seven days a week.”
  • Jon Kay: “Sitting on the big red sofa is a dream come true — you’ll even see a snippet from my childhood in the special.”
  • Sally Nugent: “I’m proud of covering campaigns like Rob Burrow and Kevin Sinfield’s MND fundraising. That’s what Breakfast does best.”
  • Carol Kirkwood: “From production secretary to weather presenter, I’ve made brilliant memories and look forward to many more.”

Don’t miss this throwback breakfast extravaganza as BBC Breakfast marks four decades of waking up the nation. Tune in for nostalgia, special guests, and plenty more to come in 2023!
