Teen Stabs Fellow Partygoer in Deadly Late-Night Row

Steven Gilmour, just 17, sparked tragedy after a night of drinking at a friend’s house on Ladyford Avenue.

Early Hours Violence Ends in Death

At around 2.30am on Saturday, 22 May 2021, police were called to reports of a disturbance in a lane behind the property. During an argument, Gilmour stabbed 19-year-old Darryl Wright before fleeing the scene.

Victim Dies Days Later

Darryl was rushed to Crosshouse Hospital but sadly died two days later, on Monday 24 May.

Perpetrator Arrested and Charged

Gilmour was arrested on the same day and charged over the fatal stabbing.

“This was an unprovoked attack on a young man who had his whole life ahead of him,” said Detective Inspector Stephen McCulloch from Saltcoats CID. “Our thoughts are very much with Darryl’s family and friends at this extremely difficult time. Police Scotland is determined to bring those responsible to justice.”
