UK and France Double Down on Defence to Thwart Putin

At the 36th UK-France Summit in Paris, Britain and France vowed to ramp up their military muscle against Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine. Defence and security took centre stage as both NATO allies pledged to back Ukraine for the long haul and strengthen their partnership.

Ben Wallace and Sébastien Lecornu Seal the Deal

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace met France’s Armed Forces Minister Sébastien Lecornu to reaffirm the ironclad UK-France alliance. Speaking after the meeting, Wallace said:

“It has been a great pleasure to meet again with my friend and defence counterpart Sébastien Lecornu. We have agreed to strengthen our defence and security partnership, committing to look at areas of cooperation to increase the interoperability of our joint defence capabilities – and to advance key projects to develop complex weapons systems.”

“Our shared and ongoing support for Ukraine remains unwavering. We will continue to provide that support for as long as it takes.”

Both nations committed to boosting Ukraine’s battlefield strength, focusing on equipment supplies, especially ammunition, and training Ukrainian troops—including marines—right here in the UK.

UK and France: Ironclad Allies on All Fronts

Chief of Defence Staff Admiral Sir Tony Radakin joined talks in Paris, highlighting deeper military ties over the next decade. He said:

“The British and French Armed Forces are working together in response to Russian aggression in Europe and to protect our shared values and interests across the globe. Now we will deepen our cooperation—supporting Ukraine today and tackling tomorrow’s challenges from security in the Arctic to carrier operations in the Pacific.”

“We’ll ramp up joint efforts from intelligence sharing to advanced weapons development, reflecting our mutual trust and commitment to NATO. The security of Europe and the Atlantic is tied to the wider world.”

Carrier Cooperation and Future Weapons Projects

  • UK and France agreed to coordinate aircraft carrier deployments, ensuring a stronger, constant European naval presence in hot zones.
  • They will support each other’s task groups and conduct joint warfighting exercises.
  • Plans to sequence carrier strike groups in the Indo-Pacific were unveiled as part of an expanded global footprint.
  • Future integration of forces aims to create seamless joint operations, leveraging shared intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) data.
  • They also committed to developing cutting-edge weapons, including the Future Cruise and Anti-Ship Weapon (FC/ASW) programme.
  • A new defence industrial strategy dialogue and collaboration on European air defence and directed energy weapons are set to intensify.

Further talks addressed homeland defence, cyber security, and maximizing the Combined Joint Expeditionary Force (CJEF) to tackle evolving threats, including in the High North.

This summit confirmed the unshakable UK-France defence bond—standing firm against Putin’s aggression and putting European security front and centre.
