Pub Brawl Ends in Tragedy: Man Dies After Dunstable Beating

Wilfred Fantie, 44, was convicted of fatally striking 28-year-old Aaron Bateman outside the Wheatsheaf pub in Dunstable last February. The deadly clash followed a dispute after Fantie, working as the venue’s doorman, ordered Mr Bateman and his group to leave.

The Fatal Fight

Mr Bateman had been at the pub with his father and friends after watching a local football match. CCTV showed Fantie chasing Mr Bateman as he walked away before delivering a powerful blow to his head. The impact caused Mr Bateman to fall, hitting his head on the pavement and suffering a traumatic brain injury.

He was rushed to hospital but tragically died two days later.

Judge Slams Killer’s Actions

Sentencing Fantie at Luton Crown Court, Judge Michael Simon delivered a stark message:

“Nothing this court says or does can mend the emptiness in the hearts and lives of Aaron’s family, specifically his father and sister but his wider family and friends as well. Aaron was pursued at a pace and with determination by the defendant. Dangerousness in my judgement is not a consideration.”

Fantie, from Henley Road, Bedford, had denied manslaughter but was found guilty last month.
